December 2003 Issue

New This Issue...

Thirty something years ago as I was forcefully removed out of mother’s womb, an ancient curse was placed on me that would forever forbid me from enjoying New Years Eve. A higher force decided that having my birthday, Christmas and New Years in the same week was more fortune than any child could handle.

I never have a good New Years Eve. Every year something happens, that inevitably leaves me or someone else in tears, angry or prone to hitchhiking home at 5 a.m. I’ve tried to reverse my luck. I have stayed home and I have been to every type of party possible but somewhere after Auld Lang whatever has been sung, my evening has gone ridiculously downhill.

One year, I spent it at a hipper than thou loft party in the Lower East Side. The party had about 800 people squeezed into three rooms and the only charge was the bottle of booze that you walked in with. I asked my friend Diana to put my purse in her purse while I went off to dance. As the evening went on, fun turned into trapped and fire hazard in the making. We then realized that my wallet and only MY wallet had been stolen out of Diana’s purse. A preliminary search only revealed that another friend was throwing up in the bathroom and unable to help. It was about this time that I remembered that I was flying back south and would have no Id to board my flight. After my empty wallet was found, I rushed back to my father’s apartment uptown to get some sleep. As I walked into the apartment, to my surprise, I walked into another party with the adults in the process of polishing off their second or third bottle of patron tequila. My father’s face swam in front of me in the only time I was ever drunk in front of him. I passed out with Diana sleeping on my feet.

Last year was the worst. Several bottles of champagne into the evening, everything that could go wrong did. An angry and crazy ex showed up and as I sat talking animatedly to him, I innocently touched his leg. Accusations of sexual harassment soon followed. When I rapidly moved to a different table, a gentleman sitting at the table next to mine randomly reached across and grabbed my face with both hands and stuck his tongue in my mouth. I realized then that it was time to leave the party and make my way home. With no cabs available, and a roommate too intoxicated to carry me home, a ride home from a stranger in a White Camaro seemed like the way to go. I spent the last few moments of New Years Eve, explaining to the stranger why he was better off with his girlfriend of seven years instead o the stripper he met the week before.

I have decided not to make any plans this year and see where the evening takes me. But for those of you looking for something new and exciting to do in NYC this year, here are a few options:
