2002 EMMY AWARDSby Anthony Incampo |

With the Emmy's coming soon, I thought I would take a break from my nostalgia stories and focus on the sad state of today's TV. While I truly believe that shows that are on cable (that means you HBO) do NOT count as real TV, so they shouldn't be nominated for any awards. So sorry Sex In the City and Six Feet Under. My main beef with giving these type of shows any Emmy's is that they are on cable - they curse, they show the occasional boob and they have a much bigger leash on controversial issues. It gives those shows much more room for jokes or violence, depending on the type of show. Do not get me wrong, I LOVE the Sopranos and Larry David's "Curb Your Enthusiasm", but I just don't consider them "regular TV" and I think they have such a big advantage over shows like Law & Order or Everybody Loves Raymond". So below I will list the nominees (& my choice) for the major awards... Hope you enjoy. |

Lead Actor in A comedy Nominees are: Ok, here we go. Bernie Mac is hilarious while on stage, but I don't think he is ready for an Emmy quite yet. I like Ray Romano, but he is not even the funniest guy on his own show, so he can't win. Kelsey Grammer was funny in the 80's and early 90's, but c'mon already. So it comes down to two Friends. A few years back, it was not even a contest, with Perry's Chandler by far the funniest on the show, but a lot has changed. The Chandler character is married now and his one-liners just aren't there, whereas LeBlanc character, Joey Tribbiani has finally blossomed. Early in the show, LeBlanc was just the good looking dumb guy, but he really does make me laugh. LeBlanc is my choice even though after years of being dull, I think David Schwimmer's Ross had a real funny season, but he wasn't even nominated. |

Lead Actress In A Comedy Nominees are; Lets cut Sarah Jessica out right off the bat (See above - the HBO rule - plus she isn't funny). Jennifer Anniston should win for her smoking body and hotness, but not for being funny. I love Jane Kaczmarek. She plays Malcolm's mom and she steals the show. Then you have Ms. Heaton from Raymond. She is great in the show, and she plays well off her supporting characters real well. And finally, Debra Messing, while she has improved, she still isn't that good. So for me it comes down to Heaton and Kaczmarek. Tough choice, but I gotta go with Malcolm's Mom. |

Best Supporting Actor in Comedy Nominees are: This one is the toughest category for me. Let's start by knocking two - David Hyde Pierce is the real deal, but he has won many times and like Kelsey Grammer, he is not as funny as he once was, mostly because the show is past its prime. Same goes for Sean Hayes. He is still funny but his character Jack is getting played out. That leaves three great candidates. You can't lose with any of these guys, but if I had to vote one guy off the island, it would have to be Cranston for his role as Malcolm's Dad. He is funny, but he needs a few more seasons to be in the finals with our 2 Raymond co-stars, Peter Boyle & Brad Garrett. I would like to have co-winners, but this isn't the Olympics, so I have to bite the bullet and make my pick. Since I recently watched "Young Frankenstein", I gotta go with Peter Boyle for his role as Frank, Raymond's cranky father. My apologies to Mr. Garrett because his character Robert is the second funniest guy on TV next to Boyle. "Holy crap, Marie!!!" |

Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Nominees are: As much as it pains me, I must stick to my guns and eliminate the HBO ladies (even though Kim Cattrall dominates the show all by herself), so bye bye ladies of the night. While Wendie Malick can hold her own and Megan Mullally is a past winner, I gotta go with Doris Roberts from Everybody Loves Raymond. Like any good mother Roberts keep the cast together. I really want to give it to Cattrall (the Emmy you perv) but a rule is a rule. Sorry Samantha!!!!! |
|
Outstanding Comedy Series Nominees are: So keeping with our rule, we can eliminate Sex in The City (boring and NOT funny) and Curb Your Enthusiasm (sorry Larry David - it is the funniest one). So we have a choice between Friends, Raymond and Will & Grace. While I admit I watch Friends on a regular basis , I do not think either Friends or Will & Grace comes close to the cast from Everybody Loves Raymond. I guess everybody DOES love Raymond - that's a winner. Oh did I mention Will & Grace? No? I didn't think so. Commercial Break......... |

Lead Actor in a Drama Nominees are: Like I said 6 Feet Under is out as is the West Wing (hey its my list not yours - so deal). I have a dilemma here because I think Michael Chiklis should win - but he is on cable, albeit the USA Network which doesn't have nudity or foul language. It pains me, but by elimination, the Emmy goes to Kiefer Sutherland. God that hurts. You know what? I change my rules. Keifer is out and Chiklis wins. I know, but do you remember him on ABC's "The Commish". He was a fat bastard - now he is all 'roided out and looking mad buff!!!! Plus I like cop shows. |

Lead Actress in a Drama Nominees are: This one is easy. No 6 Feet, no West Wing. Judging Amy? Yeah I judged Amy and I didn't like her. Jennifer Garner is hot and the show isn't too bad. She gets my vote!!! Let's skip the Supporting Actor / Actress in A Drama Category, ok? They are pretty all from either 6 Feet or West wing and I refuse to award anyone of them!!!! |
|
Outstanding Drama Series Nominees are: This is a great competition, even after eliminating 6 Feet Under and West Wing. CSI was a pleasant surprise but not Emmy ready. And I liked the concept of 24, but could anybody really keep up? So I go with Law and Order. The show has been great for a very long time and the fact that not one of its stars was nominated in any category. I like it so it wins!!!!!! Well there you have it. These are my choices for this year's Emmy's. Although I do consider myself a television connoisseur, I think I am so far off here that West Wing and 6 Feet Under will probably win everything. Oh well. This is MY column so I use MY rules. The Emmy's will be held on September 22, 2002 in Los Angeles. |
