SPIRITUALITY IN ARTby Laura Scott |
|
|
In a time of world disarray and upheaval, the desire for self-expression surfaces. Some of us may question our own sense of spirituality or lack thereof. The artist in me has gone to a deeper, more meaningful path since the attacks of last year. The spirit in me has attained a more heightened awareness. I have grown to be more sensitive with my own choices and in conveying certain messages. I've been observing many other distributions of "art in reaction" as well. Some were inspiring for me, while others left me in question or disturbance. Still, what I call a healthy outlet for the creative, hungry spirit. |

It's more of a philosophy with the intention of making oneself whole while remaining empty. |
Over the past 9 years, I have studied with a few acting coaches, different methods of acting techniques. I have also experienced working with many different actors with a wide range of style. I can't actually label myself with certain specificity in terms of "a way". I do follow a resonating guide of spirituality that rests within my studying and working, however. It involves the study of Zen in art. It is an endless learning in life as well. Here I consider myself a beginner in a newly discovered world, wherein as the actress, I consider myself experienced and needing to work! It's more of a philosophy with the intention of making oneself whole while remaining empty. In other words, "the things you most desire remain within yourself." I have studied it from a philosophical perspective and in an actual physical sense. It has not only widened my understanding for what I love to do, but has taught me to cope with the instability of my career choice. This view or philosophy, have you will, keeps things new and fun for me. It also brings a sense of humility within me as a performer. |

You should ask yourself "For what reason am I doing this?" "For whom and why?" "What do I want to come out of this?" Many times I feel that I have to go to my gut to guide me. That intuitive place needs to be sharp, especially in an industry of many disguises both beneath and above the surface. I am pretty comfortable with where I am at for the moment. I have been to different practices lately, such as ritualistic theatre, chanting, healing workshops (silent and vocal), intuition awareness, sweat lodges and Suzuki technique. Among those not incorporated into theatre practice, a Satsang and a Reiki class. I have also done rewarding work for the mentally ill and children with cancer. I feel that it is important to use your talents in a useful way. It does make a difference and there are many positive responses, some souls that were even transcended in ways. |

To add to my list of self checking: "How far will you go?" I am choosing to remain open to the future of possibility. To each her own, I'm always grateful for the enlightenment of experience. I can't say that everything I do is always either mindful or artful. As for implementing the influence of all my past spiritual teachings, they remain sacred to me and will be welcomed in the art of practice. As far as seeking "a way", it is has been searched for and found within thyself. |
